PMAY Workshop: "A Guide to Auditioning"

Join us for an in-person interactive workshop with Dr. Abrantes and Dr. Weitzel as they share tips and best practices of auditioning for summer camps and ensembles. Discover and participate in a conversation on effective ways to practice and present yourself at auditions.

Presenters:

A native of Campos do Jordão, Brazil, Dr. Ana Abrantes serves as Director of Education for the Sphinx Organization, where she oversees the Overture Program, which serves elementary school students throughout Detroit and Flint, as well as the Sphinx Performance Academy.

As a passionate educator, Dr. Abrantes is a Suzuki-certified cello teacher who incorporates the philosophy – Every Child Can! – into her teaching method and work as arts administrator. As a performer, she has appeared across the United States and Brazil. She was a core member of orchestras in Mississippi and Georgia and the principal cello for the Athens Symphony Orchestra (GA). At the University of Georgia, Ana served as principal cellist of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, a distinguished ensemble founded by Levon Ambartsumian in 1989. During ARCO's 2015 tour of Brazil, she recorded a DVD, and she was also featured as the cello soloist in Efrem Podgaits’ CD, String Fairy Tale, under the Art Classics label.  

Dr. Abrantes graduated with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance with a minor in Spanish. She later completed both a Master of Music in cello performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts with a minor in music theory from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Patricia Weitzel enjoys an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. She is the Assistant Professor of Double Bass at Penn State University and a former member of the Columbus, Des Moines, and Quad City Symphonies. She spends her Summers performing worldwide, teaching and serving as Dean of Faculty and Artistic Affairs of the Sphinx Performance Academy as well as performing in the Wintergreen Music Festival. Dr. Weitzel is also the former Membership and Marketing Chair of the International Society of Bassists, an organization with approximately 3000 members in over 40 countries whose mission is to inspire, educate, and connect bass enthusiasts through bass performance, pedagogy, research, composition, and lutherie.

Please Note: Access to the plaza connecting Temple Center City is blocked on the 16th Street side. Our building is accessed by the Temple University entrance through the plaza, approaching from the 15th Street side (facing City Hall).
