Graduating Artist Feature: Kwanyun Loo

“Going to Curtis had been a dream even before I joined the PMAY Artists’ Initiative 3 years ago.”

Kwanyun Loo started playing the cello when he was 4 years old. The hobby gradually became something more serious as he began to love its sound. “I love the cello’s range. It can reach the low bass notes and as high as the violins.” His passion and thirst for knowledge translated into more practice time and performing opportunities.

During his time in the program, he was a member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Settlement Music School Advanced Study Program and Temple Music Prep. “I only had positive experiences in the program and ensembles. I made so many friends and have many wonderful memories. PMAY has something for everyone.”

With the support of his family and teacher, Amy Barston, he decided to apply to Curtis this academic year. “I had already made videos to summer camps like Heifetz and I thought to just apply and see what happens. I never thought I would be invited to the live audition round.”

The Curtis audition requirements are one of the most demanding and the acceptance rate is about 3 to 4%. “I really felt PMAY was there for me when I was preparing for this audition. We had a mock audition and many people gave me crucial feedback. We talked about how the process would be and that really helped me calm my nerves as I had an idea of what to expect.” After 2 rounds of auditions, Kwanyun heard the wonderful news of his acceptance.

He has been a volunteer with a student-led organization, Back to Bach to bring classical music into elementary schools and occasionally interning with PRYSM to help young cellists with fingerings and bowing. “I’m not sure what the future holds for me but I dream of using my skills in music to make the world a better place.” Kwanyun will be attending the Curtis Institute of Music while also beginning high school in fall 2024.
